Ocean View Drive Speed Reduction Survey

Valla Beach Community Association have been asked to conduct a survey of the Valla Beach residents who live on and use Ocean View Drive on a regular basis. Concerns have been raised regarding the speed at which some residents and visitors to Valla Beach drive along this road. The suggestion has been put forward to have speed deterrents put in place to slow the traffic.

Click here to download a copy of the survey and email your response before July 18 in order that the survey results can be tabled at the Community Meeting on July 20.

koalaactiondayKoala Action Day - Saturday May 2 - Postponed

The Valla Beach Community Association (VBCA) together with Nambucca Valley Council are organising a Koala Action Day. It will be free and there will be music, a free sausage sizzle and much more. Koala Action Day will be at the Valla Reserve, Valla Beach at a date to be determined. Click on the poster (right) to download a copy.

Koalas need our help after these catastrophic bushfires. Help us plant a koala food tree garden in the reserve. Come and find out about these unique creatures and meet a trained koala sniffer dog. There will be workshops, information stands by the Great Koala National Park, Landcare and other non-government organisations.koalaaction daycomp

Landowners that live in appropriate areas can pick up free Koala food trees, and you can sign up for a tree planting day at a later date.

There is also a literary competition that is free to enter and with cash prizes. The winners will be invited to read their work on the day.The competition is open to all residents of the Nambucca Valley and entries must be received by the Valla Beach Community Association (VBCA) by April 9 with the winners announced at the Koala Action Day.

Get Involved!

There have been some tremendous achievements in Valla Beach over the past few years. Consider the following: Anderson Park toilets, playground, exercise equipment, cricket practice nets, beach access improvements to name but a few. This is all happening because the community is requesting it.

The Valla Beach Community Association (VBCA) is the conduit that represents the local community and works with Nambucca Shire Council to set the right priorities. Some projects are part-funded by the VBCA using funds raised at our regular Valla Beach Markets. There are more projects on the drawing board but the VBCA can't do all of the legwork.

The VBCA committee and markets subcommittee are all unpaid volunteers and we really do need some new faces. Please give some consideration to helping us help you. Consider offering your service to take the weight of a dedicated but overstretched committee. It is not an onerous task - contact us and discuss it with us.

Valla Beach Entrance Gardens - Keep it Beautiful!

The garden on the eastern side of Valla Beach Road, at the intersection with the Pacific Highway, have recently undergone a major transformation. The stonework has been greatly enhanced and the garden beds have been planted out and multched. Many thanks must go to the great team let by Andrew Bagust and Carole Anderson with notable contributions by Danny Flemming and other volunteers. Many thanks must also so to Nambucca Shire Council for their assistance.

The garden on the western side is also maintained by volunteers, Allen and Leone Hamilton.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who look after these two great assets to our community. The gardens do not look after themselves and we need more people to give the occasional hour to keep them free of weeds; many hands make light work. If you would like to assist with a few hours a month please contact us.

Deep Creek Entrance Opening Policy

Deep Creek flows into the Tasman Sea at Valla Beach. Technically it is referred to as an Intermittently Closed and Open Lakes and Lagoon (ICOLL). This means that from time to time the mouth of Deep Creek will close.

Nambucca Shire Council has a Deep Creek Management Plan that includes a policy aims at providing Council and community with a procedure for the management of the Deep Creek entrance when it is in a closed state. Section 5 of the policy states "When the water level reaches 1.4m AHD and the creek has not open naturally it should be opened on the next receding high tide". You can download a copy of this document here.

Note: AHD is Australian Height Datum - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Height_Datum

Due to the potential impacts to state projects, for example the Pacific Highway upgrade, the Department of Industry and Investment (Crown Lands and Fisheries), OEH (Office of the Environment and Heritage), and Council have all agreed that the entrance may be opened at a level lower than the agreed level set in the policy. For example, the entrance may be opened at a lower level to facilitate construction activities in relation to the construction of the new Pacific Highway bridge over Deep Creek.
